A savory, comforting gratin made with sweet Vidalia onions, cream, herbs, and bubbling cheese.

Ingredients

  • 4 large Vidalia onions, sliced thin
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a gratin dish.
  2. In a pan, melt butter with olive oil and cook onions until deeply caramelized (about 30–40 min).
  3. Spread onions into dish, pour over cream, sprinkle thyme, salt & pepper.
  4. Top with cheese and breadcrumbs. Bake uncovered for 20–25 min until golden and bubbling.

Notes

  • Try adding garlic or rosemary for extra flavor.
  • Use any good melting cheese if Gruyère is not available.
