- 1 ½ lbs ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp pepper, ½ tsp paprika
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
- 4–5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp olive oil, salt & pepper to season potatoes
- 3 tbsp butter + 3 tbsp flour
- 2 cups milk + 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ tsp garlic powder + ½ tsp mustard powder
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella (for topping)
- Fresh parsley (optional garnish)
Instructions
- Brown beef with onion and garlic. Add seasonings, Worcestershire, and tomato paste. Set aside.
- Toss thinly sliced potatoes with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
- Make cheese sauce: melt butter, whisk in flour, then milk & cream. Stir in cheddar and spices.
- Layer in a greased 9×13 pan: half potatoes, half beef, half cheese sauce. Repeat. Top with mozzarella.
- Cover with foil and bake at 375°F for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 20–25 minutes more. Let rest before serving.
Notes
- Use a mandoline for evenly sliced potatoes.
- Swap cheddar for Gruyère or Colby Jack.
- Make ahead and refrigerate up to 24 hrs before baking.
