Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices of white bread
- 4 ounces of sliced ham
- 4 ounces of Gruyère cheese, grated
- 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (optional)
- Extra Gruyère cheese for topping
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens and is smooth, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Remove from heat and mix in the grated Gruyère cheese until melted and combined.
- Lay out 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet. Layer each with sliced ham and a generous amount of the cheese sauce. Top with the remaining slices of bread to create sandwiches.
- Spread any remaining cheese sauce on top of the sandwiches and sprinkle extra Gruyère cheese over each.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing in half and serving.
Notes
- For a twist, add sautéed mushrooms or spinach to the ham for extra flavor and nutrition.
- To make it a Croque Madame, top each sandwich with a fried egg before serving.
