Classic Croque Monsieur is a delicious French sandwich made with ham and Gruyère cheese, topped with a creamy cheese sauce and baked to perfection.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of white bread
  • 4 ounces of sliced ham
  • 4 ounces of Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (optional)
  • Extra Gruyère cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens and is smooth, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Remove from heat and mix in the grated Gruyère cheese until melted and combined.
  5. Lay out 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet. Layer each with sliced ham and a generous amount of the cheese sauce. Top with the remaining slices of bread to create sandwiches.
  6. Spread any remaining cheese sauce on top of the sandwiches and sprinkle extra Gruyère cheese over each.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and bubbly.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing in half and serving.

Notes

  • For a twist, add sautéed mushrooms or spinach to the ham for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • To make it a Croque Madame, top each sandwich with a fried egg before serving.
