A delicious recipe for Patty Melts with a secret sauce that combines juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese on rye bread.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices of rye bread
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, then form into four equal patties.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.
  4. While the patties are cooking, prepare the secret sauce by mixing together the mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and paprika in a small bowl.
  5. To assemble the patty melts, spread a generous amount of the secret sauce on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place a patty with melted cheese on top of the sauce, followed by a portion of the caramelized onions. Top with another slice of bread, sauce side down.
  6. In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Grill the assembled sandwiches for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a spicy kick, add a few slices of jalapeños to the patty melts.
  • Try using different types of cheese, such as cheddar or pepper jack, for a unique flavor twist.
